Few things are as useful to the efficient operation of a water system than flowmeter-equipped distribution sectors, also known as DMAs. They provide key quantification of consumption and losses, as well as the ability to detect and react to anomalous events that may interfere with the service. They are a great addition to the system and their output is so immediately useful that we tend to believe it at face value, and run with it. But stuff breaks and flowmeters are no exception: from incorrect setup (often from the outset), to communications, power supply, deterioration or inner mechanics issues. It may be immediately visible - or sometimes not so much, giving the appearance that the monitored values are accurate or obvious to interpret. The detected event shown in the figure was not the pipe break that it looked like, but a random meter glitch that forced it to be taken out.
